Tomorrow is Election Day!

I have to admit you would have to be living under a rock not to know that tomorrow is election day and Americans will head to the polls to vote for not only President, but also for members of the House of Representatives (and Senate depending on your state), State and Local officials, and even School Board.  This will be the third Presidential election that (depending on age) the Class of 2003 will have had the opportunity to vote in, have you voted?

For last two weeks I have been working in Sioux City, Iowa on behalf of one of the candidates and it has been an amazing experience.  For me, it has been great to step outside of the beltway and travel to the heartland and meet and talk with the people of this great country.  For example, yesterday, I discovered that one of our very dedicated volunteers, Bob, has provided a home for over 100 foster children.  He and his wife, in their 60's, are proud parents to 11, six biological and five adopted.  Yet every night he comes into our HQ to make calls, leaving behind his wife and the three foster children (all under the age of two) who they are currently caring for.  Simply amazing.

People are certainly passionate about their candidate, but above all, they are passionate about their country.  Regardless of the outcome of the Presidential race, I believe that the people of this country will continue to work together to move this country forward.

Have you dedicated time and energy to a campaign, Presidential or other?  I would encourage you to share your experiences.

Note:  I hope that this will give people an opportunity to share positive experiences and not take to "bashing" either candidate.  Please be respectful in your comments.

Five Years Later, Five Things About Me

It amazes me that it is October 1st, where has the year gone? Yet as I look forward to the Homecoming this weekend, I simply cannot believe it has been FIVE years since I graduated from Chapman University. FIVE YEARS.

This Saturday the Class of 2003 will hold its five-year reunion and it got me thinking, "a lot has happened in my life in five years, I wonder what has happened in other people's?" So, in preparation for this weekend and looking forward to re-connecting with my fellow 2003 classmates, I thought I would share five things that I have done or experienced since I graduated, in hopes of you all sharing with me five things that you have done or experienced since graduation. At the minimum it will provide some tidbits to start conversation on Saturday.

FIVE YEARS, FIVE THINGS:

1. In August of 2003, I moved to Falls Church, Virginia to attended Graduate School at George Mason University (technically two things!) P.S. I finished in 2005
2. Ran my first 5K in 2006 (training for a 1/2 marathon right now)
3. SOLD MY CAR (painful for a California native; but I live in the city now and don't need one)
4. Served as Communications Director for a Congressional Candidate (in a five-way primary; my guy lost)
5. Became a homeowner on Aug 1st, 2008; my boyfriend and I own a Capitol Hill row house

There are tons of other very memorable (perhaps more memorable) things that I have done or experienced in the last five years, so come talk to me this weekend. I would love to hear what is going on in your life!

Also, if you haven't registered for the Class of 2003 reunion BBQ on Saturday, October 4, 2008 from 5:00pm-6:30pm, no fear. Click here for registration information. The schedule of Homecoming activities can be found here and also, join me for the Chapman University Toyota of Orange 5k, register here.

See you this weekend!

Once upon a time...

Sarah (Roberts) Alexander '03 and Jonathan Alexander '02 met at Chapman University in spring of 2001. They were introduced by their mutual friend and fellow Chapman alumn, Courtney Johnson, who knew they'd be perfect for each other. They didn't have much time to get to know each other before Sarah went to Greece to study abroad for a semester. Shortly after her return, Sarah was diagnosed with lymphatic cancer. Jon was her biggest supporter as she struggled to complete her senior year at Chapman while undergoing chemotherapy. That's when Sarah really knew that Jon was "the one." In May of 2007, after six years together, Jon proposed! When it came time to decide where to have their engagement photos taken, they knew the Chapman campus was the perfect place! They wanted a location that was both beautiful and meaningful, so Chapman University was the natural choice! On August 16, 2008, Jon and Sarah were married. They now reside in in Los Angeles and would love to hear from their Chapman friends. Contact them at clarityandstatic@yahoo.com. To see more of their engagements pictures click here!

Chapman Alum Sets Marathon Goal! Marathon in each state!

Kevin Hansen '05 will be participating in the Long Beach Marathon this October, his 7th Marathon since June 2007. And he doesn't plan on slowing down anytime soon - he just signed up for November's ING New York City Marathon as the first step in achieving his new goal - he plans to run at least one marathon in every state! He is already signed up for the Walt Disney World Marathon and the Arizona Rock N Roll Marathon (both in January 2009) and the Seattle Rock N Roll Marathon in June 2009, but his first venture outside of California for a marathon will be to the Big Apple during the first weekend in November. He is also looking forward to running that marathon with his twin sister, Katie!

As part of his acceptance into the New York City Marathon, he is participating in a fundraiser to help raise money for the Central Park Conservancy, the agency that maintains the beauty and safety in Central Park. His goal is set at $3,000 and has about 6 weeks to raise the funds.
If you would like to make a donation to his cause, you can visit his fundraising page

If you are interested in joining Kevin and friends for a run, feel free to join his running group (F.O.R.B. - Ferocious Orange Running Brigade) on facebook to get a schedule of upcoming runs:

Newport Beach Wine Event

I'm extremely excited and proud to serve the Chapman Alumni Association, as I have received great benefits from my Chapman education. I'm also lucky to be working with a great council -- the Chapman Connections Council -- whose members are all eager to give back to our Alma Mater.

The council has been planning some innovative and exciting events for this school year - starting with a great event at a private winery in Newport Beach. This winery is so exclusive, that unless invited or attending an event, it's not open to the public. Register today and join us as the winery serves its award winning wines and hors d'oeuvres from Pascal. Dr. Doti will also give a brief speech of things to come this year.

I hope to reconnect with everyone...

Cheers!
